What was the release date?
The "Product Preview" in October 1999 Beckett Hockey Card Monthly, Issue #108 stated it was scheduled for September 20 1999. But the " Century Legends Lives Up To Its Name" 9/30/1999 10:21:20 AM on Beckett.com stated it was to be released the week of October 4, 1999. How many boxes were produced? There are potentially 11,400 relatively unique cards: they had 90 base cards plus 23 autos that had #/100 parallels, 50 Autographed Jerseys, 10 Artifact cards, and 40 Year of the Great One Jerseys. If you figure each of these cards was one per box then you get 11,400 boxes each with a "unique" card in it. But you certainly did not get one unique card per box. So what would the odds be to get a unique card: 1 in 2 boxes, in 3 boxes, or in 4 boxes. That gives 22,800 boxes or 34,200 boxes or 45,600. Are any of these numbers close? 1999-00 SP Authentic (a comparable product?) had 35 RC #/2000 that is 70000 RCs at 3 per box gives 23333 boxes. What is the box breakdown? 5 cards/pack and 24 packs/box. The Stated Odds are:
What is the difference between Epic Signatures and Century Epic Signatures? It may be a silly question, but there are fakes out there so I added it. Both Signature cards have the same numbers on the back. The Epic Signatures have a Silver "frosting" effect on the edges with a Silver band under the lettering "Epic Signature" like the Yzerman, Bure redemption, and Mikita scans above. The Century Epic Signatures are hand numbered to 100 and have a Gold frosting with a Gold band under the lettering "Epic Signature" like the Samsonov and Orr scans above. It is probably better to look for the color of the band under the lettering since the black and white photos do tend to look silver and some cards like the Bobby Hull have a gold background. The Mikita in the scan above is a fake (Silver background but numbered out of 100). How many Epic Signatures were released? The stated odds are 1 in 23 packs. That is one Epic Signature per box. So, the total number of Epic Signatures that were released would be equal to the number of boxes produced. Which (if any) Epic Signatures were short printed? Based on the speculation above on how many boxes were produced, each player would have to sign between 1,000 and 2,000 Epic Signature cards (22 autos in the set -- Gretzky out because he signed at most 100). Bure, Robinson, and Samsonov were redemptions, so I assume that they were short printed. Others like Orr, Howe, Lemieux, and Richard may have been short printed (I'm basing this in part on Beckett book values and on how many cards I see on eBay etc.) so you could expect the "average" player to sign 2,000 to 3,000 cards? No cards have been officially listed or stated to be shortprinted. The Mikita in the scan above is a fake (Silver background but numbered out of 100). How many Jerseys of the Century were released? The stated odds are 1 in 475 packs. That is one Jersey of the Century per 20.6 boxes. So, the number of Jerseys of the Century that were released would be the number of boxes divided by 20.6. Which (if any) Jerseys of the Century were short printed? Gretzky seems to be the rarest; maybe Lemieux and Bourque (I'm basing this in part on Beckett book values and on how many cards I see on eBay etc.)? No cards have been officially listed or stated to be shortprinted. What colors of Jerseys of the Century are there? These are the colors I have seen.
I have never heard about any of them, but I started keeping track of this stuff very late. |

Why is there no card #23? The story I heard is that Upper Deck failed to come to terms with Ken Dryden and was unable to issue his card #23. Why does the Dryden error card appear the way it does? A scan of this card is above, it is brightly colored and has the raised impression of the 1999 Upper Deck Wheels insert card High Gear Top Tier TT1 (Jeff Gordon). The story I heard (from a guy who claimed to talk to Upper Deck) was that the card is an "ink-test" card produced in a test of the print run. The card was stamped with the die from the 1999 Wheels High Gear Top Tier TT1 Jeff Gordon in order to "destroy" the card (since they had no agreement with Dryden to actually issue it). In part the bright colors were supposed to make it easy to pick it out of the production run before it got into packs. I assume that the "design" of the colors is related to it being characterized as an ink test card. Interestingly, card #82 (Gordie Howe) from 1999 Upper Deck Retro was also not released but some cards did make it to the public. In this case, the card did not have the brightly colored "ink test" striping but looked like a normal card with a picture of Howe that had also been stamped with the die from the 1999 Wheels High Gear Top Tier TT1 Jeff Gordon. So why is there the difference between the "ink test" pattern on the Dryden and the regular picture on the Howe? I can only speculate that they knew they were not going to come to terms with Dryden early enough that they kept the "ink test" pattern so they could more easily pick it out of the run before it made it to the packs. Whereas in the case of Howe they did not have time to avoid using the original picture. This is entirely speculation on my part. How many Dryden error cards were released? I have seen about 5 sell on eBay. I have not really kept track and I can't guarantee that the same card was not resold. Were some Epic Signatures planned but never issued? Interestingly, UpperDeck.com's Upper Deck Collection contains two Epic Signatures sets: one with 25 unique players listed and the other with 23 unique players listed. The added players are Gretzky (who was only issued in the Century Epic Signatures), Yzerman (who was depicted on the promo sheets) and Dryden (who they failed to agree to produce the base card for - maybe the failure to reach an agreement was actually with the autograph). The "Product Preview" in the October 1999 Beckett Hockey Card Monthly, Issue #108 states that there were 25 Epic Signatures and 25 Century Epic Signatures in the set. Also, Beckett.com's collection tool lists Chelios, Lindros, Dryden, Roy, Kariya, and Yzerman in the Epic Signature set. So I think it is a safe bet that Dryden, Gretzky, and Yzerman were originally planned as part of the 25 Epic Signatures and 25 Century Epic Signatures. As for why Chelios, Lindros, Roy, and Kariya are listed by the Beckett.com collections tool, perhaps these players were planned but other players were substituted. For example, Gerry Cheevers and Tony Esposito are not in the base set but are in the Epic Signatures. This raises questions as to why they were in the Epic Signature set at all. Also, Pavel Bure and Sergei Samsonov were redemptions: could this be because they were late additions to the set? Further, for some fans Bure and Samsonov are not obvious choices for the Epic Signatures when compared to Lindros and Kariya. Finally, what happened to the Gretzky regular (Silver) Epic Signature - it was not released. Was the Bure Century Epic Signatures (Gold, #/100) issued? The Bure gold Epic was a redemption card like the silver. The redemption card certainly exists, a scan is in the 1999 Century Legends Image Gallery. However, no one that I have talked to has ever seen a redeemed Bure Signature #/100. In fact, one collector told me that he pulled a redemption card and sent it in to be redeemed but received a letter stating that the Bure gold would not be released and he received 3 Bure autos as compensation... a Century Silver auto, a Retro auto, and an MVP proSign. I have not been able to get Upper Deck to confirm this, but have no reason to doubt my fellow collector. Were some Jerseys of the Century planned but never issued? The "Product Preview" in the October 1999 Beckett Hockey Card Monthly, Issue #108 states that there were 5 Jerseys of the Century and 5 Jersey of the Century Autographs (numbered to 25). Also, the promo sheets state there are 5 Jerseys of the Century. So who is the late arrival? Gretzky because of the lack of a regular Epic Signature? And why where the Autographed Jerseys of the Century (numbered to 25) of Bossy, Bourque, Lemieux, and Gretzky never released? |
Promotional Items |

Were any promo or sample cards issued? There were promo cards issued to dealers for Baseball with "Sample" stamped on the back. I have not heard of promo cards for Hockey or any other sport. How many different promotional/information sheets were issued? Two different promo sheets were issued (one one-sided sheet and one two-sided). They share the side shown in the scan in the 1999 Century Legends Image Gallery. The back of the second sheet contains a more detailed breakdown of the set similar to the information found on the box (no photos of cards). Are there any errors on the promotional sheets? There are at least 7 errors:

What is the Wayne Gretzky Exclusive Bonus Pack? These packs were placed inside every Hobby box of 1999 Century Legends, 1999 MVP, 1999 Retro, 1999 Upper Deck Series One. The cards combined to produce a set of 99 cards "Wayne Gretzky Exclusives" not to be confused with Upper Deck's "1999 Wayne Gretzky Hockey", "1999 Wayne Gretzky Living Legends", or the Exclusives parallel to the 1999 Upper Deck Series I and II. Is the "Year of the Great One Jersey" part of the set? I would say no. The card was released in three products 1999 Century Legends, 1999 MVP, and 1999 Retro - there were 40 in each product. They are like the 500 goal club game used cards, originally Beckett lists them with the sets but they really are not. |
Fake and Backdoor Items |
|
---|---|
Are there Fake Century Epic Signatures? There are counterfeit Century Epic Signatures. In order to spot a fake you need to understand the difference between the regular issue and the #/100 issue. Both have the same card numbers on the backs. The Mikita in the scan above is a fake (Silver background but numbered out of 100). I have also seen fakes of Bossy, Clarke, and Dionne. Are there Fake Century Collection Parallels? There are counterfeit Century Collection parallels. In order to spot a fake you need to understand the difference between the regular issue and the #/100 issue. The foil on the Century Collection parallels are different than on the regular base cards. The gold foil used in the logos is a darker more bronze-like color (rather than yellowish on the regular cards) and the silver foil has a refractor-like effect within the silver-ribbed band down the right side and the player name. The hand numbering is not the biggest issue as I have seen authentic Gretzky parallels that were hand numbered but had the proper foil (no doubt replacement cards). Are there Fake Jerseys of the Century Autographs? I doubt it. Although the pictures and card layouts are identical for the regular jersey and the autographed version, the numbers on the back are different (the autographed versions are JC1-A and JC2-A). Furthermore, the "Jersey of the Century" lettering on the front and the lines around the photo are a different color: silver foil for the regular jersey and gold foil for the autographed jersey. Nevertheless, to the untrained eye, if you forged a signature and hand numbered it you may be able to pass it off as an autograph. There are however Buybacks of Jerseys that have been autographed and reissued.
Is there evidence of product going "out the back door"? Many would say yes given that cards like the unnumbered Clarke Autographed Jersey of the Century and the unnumbered Orr Gold Epic Signature are surfacing. Were the cards held back as replacements for damaged cards and got out the back door or did they slip through the production run? I have confirmed with some collector's that some of the signed but unnumbered cards (Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux) were issued by UD as replacements for damaged cards from subsequent years and sets. In the case of the Samsonov (unsigned), more than likely it was a redemption card and someone managed to remove the redemption offer sticker. Similarly, did some of the Dryden #23 cards managed to make it to packs... or out the back door? Some collector's claim to have pulled these from packs. |

Empty but sealed pack I pulled it myself from a box that had an empty pack and a couple of packs with only 2 or 3 cards. Unissued card was released Card 23 - Ken Dryden / Jeff Gordon (see the scan above). Cards missing the silver foil overprint I have 35 of these and looking for more... (see the scan of Martin Brodeur above). FAKE Century Epic Signatures See the discussion of fakes above. Unsigned Century Epic Signature "gold" This may be a redemption card that had the redemption sticker removed. Card #SS - Sergei Samsonov above. Unnumbered Jersey of the Century Signature This is most likely a replacement/substitution for a damaged card from subsequent years/sets Card #JC1-A - Bobby Clarke above. Unnumbered Epic Signature "gold" These are most likely replacements/substitutions for damaged cards from subsequent years/sets. Cards #BO - Bobby Orr, #ML - Mario Lemieux, and #WG - Wayne Gretzky. Black ink Epic Signatures There are a few Epic Signatures (both silver and gold) that were signed in black ink rather than blue ink. I have one and am always looking for more, see the scans in the 1999 Century Legends Image Gallery. Buyback autographs Upper Deck issued Buyback Autos using various cards from this set. Most of the buybacks are base cards but there are also Buybacks of the jerseys, see the scans in the 1999 Century Legends Image Gallery).

Two different promotional/information sheets Two different promo sheets were issued with a number of errors. Why is there no article in "The Sporting News" corresponding to the set? The set claims to be based on The Sporting News "Top 50 Players" but is actually based on The Hockey News "Top 50 NHL Players of All-time" January 9, 1998. Republished in a book, The Top 100 NHL Hockey Players of All Time, by Steve Dryden and Michael Ulmer (editors). What articles are there on this set? I know of 3 articles.
Two different promotional/information sheets Two different promo sheets were issued with a number of errors. What other sports have a 1999 Century Legends set by Upper Deck? Upper Deck issued 1999 Century Legends sets for Baseball, Basketball, Football, and Hockey. |
